Re: FW: [San Juan Hut to hut] Fwd: [San Juan Hut to hut] RE: Telluride Housing & Shuttle & Beer

From Mike Sojka

Med conditions: occasional hay fever due to certain pollens but most sensitive to cedar pollen in the spring. I treat with freeze dried nettles which works for me. The only other sporadic condition is gastro issues causing diarrhea and stomach cramps - happens infrequently like every few months. I take a Chinese supplement called Po Chai pills that works very fast to eliminate. I am going to bring both these herbal supplements with me. Thankfully I have no other physical conditions and am not on any meds at all - no blood pressure, hypertension, heart, diabetes, etc issues. I was having some plantar fasciatis issues in one foot a couple years ago but have had no problems the last 9+ months.

I second the call for complete honesty about physical limitations and communicating how you are feeling on the trip. Also, hydration is a real issue and we need to start heavily hydrating as soon as we get to CO.  Drink water every day enough so that your pee is clear.  I learned this the hard way when doing a 5 week bike tour. Any color in my pee almost guaranteed a headache at a minimum and physical fatigue after even 20 miles riding at worst. I'm  talking fatigue like wanting to fall asleep while pedaling - yea, that bad.

I'd be willing to arrange a first aid kit, if someone else wants to step up and own the tool kit? I have spare tubes, but I really don't have a lot of bike repair tool/knowledge.

Also to note the first three days of the trip we are seriously at high altitude. Here is your first Nurse Jan Nag….. HYDRATE seriously those days. Communicate if you are not feeling well.  Do not minimize. I had trouble last year in Shasta due to dehydration.  After the first three days, we decrease, but the whole trip is over 4500'. For us sea level folk, that'll be a challenge.  Also, I want to know if you have any medical issues…. Let me know now in case I need to bone up on the condition.

I have given some thought to cars. The bible also noted that parking in Telluride is very difficult. It may be worth our effort to see about shuttling the car(s) to Moab which appears to be more parking friendly. Lots of phone numbers to call on that one.  I can haul people in my rig, but not bikes.  Since it looks like we are all heading to Gunnison, if we left my rig in Moab, we'd definitely need the one car to haul 5 peeps and bikes. Or we take two rigs to Gunnison/Telluride and hire a shuttle to Moab.

Lightening!! Yikes, it is big and powerful there. We ride early!! This is not a sleeping in vacation.

So far I've got Sarah, Jan, and Mike Sojka for beer.  And yes, as Mike Sojka noted earlier I'm up for Gunnison.  Dave

PS - For logistics consideration, our hotel in Moab (Hampton Inn) said they'd allow us to leave a vehicle in their parking lot while we're out doing the ride.

Beer….yes. I read it differently though. I read that it you get 1-3 beers and there is no knowing what you'll find….maybe good maybe PBR. I'm pretty sure it is heavy on the PBR.

Gunnison to Telluride is 2.5 miles. Assuming we'd want to get an early start to riding, we'd have to jet out of Gunnison around ….6am? According to the route sheet, our first day is 13 or 17 miles. (the 17 mile option sounds fun and if we have been in the area, we may be "acclimatized"…..check it out.  Either way, I would think if we started riding by 10am at the latest, we'd be good.

I have an old bike. It has a fork.

  1. Beer - yes
  2. Gunnison - yes. I am OK with getting up early the day of.
  3. I think Dave, Michael and Mike are driving together from Truckee. The trailer is an option but we have not finalized yet.
  4. The easiest thing is to pay for having the cars/car shuttled over. But, we could do the driving ourselves especially if we have Michael's trailer.
  5. Michael's trailer I believe has front fork mounts which will be an issue for anyone with a through axle so that needs to be understood and somehow accommodated if we want to use the trailer. I know Dave has a through axle. Anyone else with that tech?

Beer Plan?  Yes for me.

Housing:

Jan and I are staying at Erin's in Gunnison for the 7th and 8th.  Leaning towards staing the 9th too (get up early and drive to Telluride for the first day).  We'll miss out on seeing the town of Telluride, but we gain some cool pre-rides around Gunnison/Crested Butte.

Jan says Erin says we are all welcome.  Beds: queen bed, single bed, couch for the first night (Jul 7).  Another bed for the 8th & 9th (if we stay) after Erin leaves for vacation.  Probably a bit of a squeeze, but hey - can't beat the price!

So, who's in for Gunnison?  Is anyone really set on staying the 9th in Telluride?  If so, do you have hotel plans yet?  Other housing plans?

Shuttle:

Are CA folk (Mike Mike & Dave) driving in one car or two?

Seems like we should meet up in Moab and leave a vehicle there.  After that we can all pile into one large or two smaller vehicles to get from Moab to Gunnison?  Someone mentioned a trailer a while ago - that would seem necessary to make a single vehicle work.

Or we can give up on our own shuttle and just hire someone.  Or one or two of us can hitchhike back from Moab to Telluride to get any cars we leave there!  :-P
