Re: [San Juan Hut to hut] GPS Route Supplied by SJH2H - I think this is IMPORTANT!

Several steps:
  1. Use GPXEditor to remove time data from several tracks so ridewithgps would identify them as "routes" and not "rides"
  2. Sort through routes to figure out which days they went with.  Label accordingly.
  3. Trim start/end of a few routes that spanned multiple days.
  4. Use ridewithgps "trace" feature to re-work several routes to improve smoothness.  Couldn't do this for the singletrack routes because smoothing requires "following roads".

I read the email but thought the ridewithgps routes you uploaded were no different than what SJH2H sent us. I didn't realize you parsed out what they sent originally into something new.

How did you clean up what was sent to us?

Mike,

Did you not read my earlier email about this?  I cleaned up all the routes and put them here:
     http://ridewithgps.com/events/San-Juan-Huts-Telluride-to-Moab

"D1" => Day1
"D1a"  => Day1 alternate
...

I modified the final day routes to end at the hotel (minor changes).

PS: Tried replying to your "blogger" email address, but it didn't go anywhere.  IMO this blog thing doesn't work so well for replies.

This is mainly to Sarah and Dave who have some experience with bike GPS units and may have already played with the file given to us by SJH2H.  I uploaded the file today to ridewithgps.com and it unpacked into 10 different routes. A couple of the routes were actually two days in one though they were not named as such (at least how ridewithgps unpacked the one file). Also, I noticed the routes do not follow the roads exactly which means we will probably be getting false negatives about being off-route almost constantly.

My question is has anyone else tried looking at the routes inside a gps application and what have you seen?  We can go over this in Gunnison before the trip but it would be nice to do more homework now to really understand what we are going to experience out on the route and which route to use each day.  GPS units can be hard-to-use and frustrating in the best cases. This looks like a ready-made confusion maker right off the bat (at least the way it looks to me which I hope is ridewithgps.com's fault)

Telluride to Moab (looks like this is the official 1st day)
Day 1: Alt. Galloping Goose sanjuanhuts
Day 1: Tride to LD Hut sanjuanhuts
Day 2: Alt. Rim Trail Loop sanjuanhuts
DAY 2: ALT. UPPER SPRING CREEK LOOP SANJUANHUTS
Day 3: SC Hut to CO Hut sanjuanhuts
Day 3: Alt. Recommended sanjuanhuts
Day 4: CO Hut to GR Hut sanjuanhuts (note this route is 60 miles long - NOT!)
Day 5: GR Hut to GW Hut sanjuanhuts (NOTE THIS ROUTE IS 70 MILES LONG - not!)
Day 7: Alt. PorcupineRim Trail sanjuanhuts

So, it looks like there is no day 6 but I think it is part of Day 5. There does not seem to be a day 7 recommended but it might be part of Day 5 too.  And, Day 1 is confusing with two different routes looking like the recommended one.

I am confused and am hoping one of you can help me. If not, we may want to have a discussion with SJH2H.

Thanks for reading!!
