More Drive Planning

[Tried to comment on the first post, but couldn't (blogger acct vs google acct weirdness), so I'm just making a second post.]

I'd like to be in Telluride early as well.  My time is pretty flexible as I am still un-self-employed (BTO lyric reference).  My only restriction might be that our cycling team often has a fun/team ride on the 4th, which means we *might* want to be in Portland on the 4th.

Google says the drive directly from Portland to Telluride is 18hrs (two days).  That route goes nowhere near Mt Shasta!

Jan and I were initially talking about leaving Portland on the 6th.  Sleep somewhere in the middle and arrive in Telluride on the 7th.  Not set in stone at all though.

If Jan & I go via Mt Shasta, google says the drive is ~23hrs.  Probably one day to Mt Shasta, then the same two days Mike & Dave are looking at from CA to CO.  In that case, Jan & I would leave Portland on the 4th to be in Mt Shasta on the 5th (and miss any July 4 team ride).

Another driving option would be for us to drive separately and meet in Moab UT.  We could leave a car in Moab and put all the bikes on the MikeW's trailer.  Or, if we do a longish 11hrs the first day, both the CA->CO and OR->CO routes meet in Salt Lake City where we could stay overnight.  That leaves a 6hr drive to Telluride the next day (leave a car in Moab on the way).

Telluride:  Looks like the town is split into "Downtown" and "Mountain Village".  I'd think we'd want to stay downtown since that's where the bulk of the stores and restaurants are - though we'll have cars, so maybe not a big deal.  I looked at some AirBnB options.  If we split 5 ways we could probably get something nice.

  1. I like the AirBnB option of splitting a place in Telluride. Being able to cook can save mucho dineros and is healthier. Plus I am sure you could find a nice place that would be more enjoyable than a motel room.

  2. So far I'm getting the sense that a Telluride arrival date of July 7th is doable. It also doesn't seem practical for Sarah & Jan (from Portalnd) to meet up with Mike S & Mike W (from Mt. Shasta) and myself (from SF Bay Area) somewhere along the way to Telluride. If anything, from a logistics standpoint, the CA guys could meet up along the way to Telluride (like in the Reno/Tahoe area). But I'm not opposed to driving to Telluride solo.

Perhaps we should shoot for meeting in Telluride on the 7th. At most, we'd have 3 cars in Telluride on the 7th. That would give us a couple of days before the 10th to shuttle a car back to Moab. I could also meet the Mike's in Moab on the way to Telluride, leave my car in Moab and continue with them to Telluride.

PS - I also like the AirBnB option in Telluride.
